Premature Baby Diapers Manufacturer — OEM Guide for Preemie Sizes

Reason for Writing This Post

In the most recent case, consideration was given to a request made by a buyer regarding a set of baby diapers, which were to be custom made for premature children weighing 0.5–1 kg, 1–1.5 kg, and 1.5–3 co kg. The request specified dimensions for the design, which was to be basic and uncomplicated, and which diverts from the set standard preemie dimensions used by the factory.

It became apparent to us that for buyers wishing to OEM Premature Baby Diapers, the situation described above was the norm. We consolidated this information to produce a guide. This guide explains how we meet the customer’s specifications, control the expenditure, and accelerate the period from sampling to bulk production.

1) Buyer Target Specifications (For Reference)

The buyer we collaborated with provided these specific requirements, and they are a perfect illustration of the tailored specifics we can accommodate.

Sizes 0.5–1.0 kg: Length 210 mm, Waist width 185 mm, Pad width 100 mm, Weight ~5 g per diaper.

Sizes 1.0–1.5 kg: Length 240 mm, Waist width 185 mm, Pad width 125 mm, Weight ~8 g per diaper.

Sizes 1.5–3.0 kg: Length 280 mm, Waist width 240 mm, Pad width 160 mm, Weight ~11 g per diaper.

They also had specific construction preferences.

2) Our Standard Premature Baby Diapers Sizes (Ready for Customization)

Before we get into advanced customization, let’s discuss the baseline preemie diaper specs, which are the foundation that we alter to fit your requirements.

Base Materials

All our standard preemie baby diapers use: Soft spunbond nonwoven topsheet (gentle on delicate skin) + Wood pulp + SAP (super-absorbent polymer) + PE + nonwoven composite backsheet (breathable and durable) + Plain frontal tape + PE tapes. Blue absorbent cores are also provided.

260 × 195 mm0.75–1.25 kg≈ 10 g≈ 100 mlTransition size, stronger leg seals

*Note: Unit weight may vary a tad due to glue line position, tape, and printing (we’re happy to slightly adjust weight, if needed).

Packing Options

You can choose to pack either 25 or 30 diapers in a single bag. Bags can be customized with your private label or kept plain to compliment your brand.

3) Merging Your Requirements with Our Existing Tools

As precisely as unfinished business might seem, adjust our approach without starting from scratch to minimize both time and expense. Here’s how I approached the recent call from the buyer:

0.5-1.0 kg Size

Buyer’s ask: length = 210 mm, waist = 185 mm, pad width = 100 mm and weight per diaper = ~5 g

Our standard: dimension 210 mm length, 150 mm waist, 6.5 g per diaper

Our approach: Maintain the length if it works, modify the width to meet target numbers, and prepare two samples leaning a tad closer to the target weight with a plain design and blue core.

1.0–1.5 kg Size

Buyer’s ask: 240 mm length / 185 mm waist / 125 mm pad width / ~8 g per diaper

Our standard: 260 × 195 mm / ~10 g per diaper

Our plan: Shorten the length to 240–250 mm, set the pad width to 125 mm, and target a weight of 8–9 g (a small buffer to keep absorbency reliable).

1.5–3.0 kg Size

Buyer’s ask: 280 mm length / 240 mm waist / 160 mm pad width / ~11 g per diaper

Our standard: 310 × 220 mm / ~13 g per diaper

Our plan: Optimize the length to 280–295 mm, adjust the waist to 240 mm and pad width to 160 mm, and aim for 11–12 g per diaper.

Controlling Expenses

Onboarding you as a customer and optimizing the processes for you as well is a whole engineering effort. For this buyer, association of a monotonous and plain exterior, PE+non woven composite backsheet and PE tape, ‘automagically’ appears on the desktop as a ‘Ready to Order’ document. This means and ensures that special sourcing for the components does not happen, and hence, the price of the module to you is competitive.

4) Ordering and Order Planning

Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)

For each preemie size, the minimum order quantity is 200,000 diapers For Each Size.

Example: If you order all 3 sizes (0.5 – 1kg, 1 – 1.5 kg, 1.5 – 3 kg) the total comes out to 600,000 diapers.

Basic Calculations in Order and Bag Count

Depending on if you have chosen 25 or 30 diapers per bag, this is what your order summary comes out to

25 diapers per bag: 200,000 bags/ 25 diapers = 8000 bags per size of each tier.

30 diapers per bag: 200,000 bags/ 30 diapers = 6666 full bags and 20 other diapers per size.

Quick tip: If you want the bag counts to be more even, order quantities that are multiples of 30 diapers. If not, we’ll top up the last bag with extra to make it feel like you are not even a number.

5) Common Questions (For Buyers and Parents)

Q: Does a premature baby require a special kind of diaper? What one would that be?

A: Yes, a preemie would require a specific diaper that fits the width and length of their body. The best options have:

  • More precise, smaller, and delicate fittings.
  • Materials which are soft (to avoid rash and other tumble abrasions)
  • Weights that are of the lowest range.
  • Core and leg openings that are narrower (to prevent rub without leak)
  • A low-allergy experience with topsheets
  • Vents and non-woven back sheets which are PE and breathable.
  • A gentle tape that does not create tight pressure on the sensitive skin.

Q: What are the differences, in your opinion, in preemie and newborn (NB) diapers?

A: The main differences are:

  • Diaper Size: Preemie nappy diapers are shorter and narrower, newborns are too big for the majority under the 2 kg.
  • Weight and Absorbency: Preemie diapers are less in weight and the absorbency is tailored towards premature changes which is common for preemies.
  • Fit Details: Preemie diaper fits are constructed with softer, slimmer waist, and leg elastics to avoid massive pressure marks on the low weight babies.

Q: What is your take on Preemie vs Newborn diapers?

A: The weight of the baby, and any advice from the health professionals need considering:

  • ≤ 2.0 kg: Preemie diapers would be the best fit.
  • 2.0–2.5 kg: Uses large preemie size or small newborn size and works great for transitions.
  • ≥2.5 kg: Newborn diapers will usually fit.

If you’re uncertain, try two adjacent sizes. You’re looking for a snug, not tight, seal at the leg and waist and absent of leaks.

Q: How often should I change a preemie’s diaper if they have diaper rash?

A: Gentler, more frequent changes are recommended.

During the day, check every two to three hours and change the diaper right after a stool is noted.

At night, the baby should not be disturbed unless they have a stool or clearly visible irritation is noted.

Barrier creams should be used if advised by a clinician after the skin is gently cleaned with alcohol-free wipes or warm water, patted dry, and the barrier cream applied.

Q: What about preemies who have outgrown preemie diapers but are too small for newborns? Are there pull-ups for them?

A: There are ultra-small pull-ups, but the waistband for babies less than or equal to 2.5 kg is difficult. The better option is to use a large preemie size such as our 310×220 mm or a small newborn size as a bridge.

6) Customization Options

Your brand and needs for the preemie diapers are important to us. Customization for the following features below is available.

  • Appearance: Plain/minimalist back sheet and frontal tape (no print, low ink print for muted low-ink designs possible).
  • Back sheet: PE + non woven composite (fairly standard, breathable, and economically priced preemie solution).
  • Core: The blue core is noted as a special request. Also, we can modify the ratio of SAP to pulp depending on the results of your absorbency testing.
  • Fastening: Standard PE tapes or, if you’d like, magic tapes.
  • Formulation: All of our preemie diapers have been formulated to be fragrance-free and latex-free as well as free of any other essential harsh or strong materials.
  • Packing: Packs of 25 and 30, whether bilingual or unilingual, contain only a plain cover with your insignia as an economical choice or stylishly branded bags.

Sampling and Production Workflow

We have chosen the best strategy to ensure that samples are provided quickly, without sacrificing production. Here is how it works:

  • Confirm sizes: We confirm the targets relative to the three sizes, in length, waist circumference, width of the absorbent pad, and the weight of the unit.
  • Design Freeze: We reach an agreement on the configuration of the components: backsheet, blue core, tapes, core, and all tapes, and even the things like tapes on the blue core so that any compliance or no compliance is static in the end.
  • Prepare two rounds of samples: The first one is for standard sizes as a reference and the second one is for the tuned size with your specs and leaky, rewet, and clump tests.
  • Finish the Bill of Materials and parameters: Based on your testing opinions, we adjust the absorbency, glue lines, and elastic tension, then close the Bill of materials.
  • QC: Full production with inline quality control (absorbency and rewet rewet spillage, tensile strength, side leakage, tape peeling, and even batch tracking checks so you know every absorbent product passes every standard).
  • Market documentation: We fill the list with any needed documents (material statements, latex-free and fragrance-free certificates).
